A Little Comic Tutorial by cocoaferret A Little Comic Tutorial by cocoaferret
A tutorial showing my process! This was the comic I used as a sample XD :

'Little' my foot! D:< Wooooow, this is super long! I didn't think it would be so huge! sheesh....

Anyways, same format as the watercolor tutorial; I feel like a step-by-step guide keeps the focus c:

And I hope I didn't immediately turn you off because I use a different program! Like I said, a lot of these techniques should be just the same on higher versions of photoshop, among other programs.

And I apologize for not showing you ALL the special effects I use, but the thing is I don't have a very good grasp of them myself!

I don't do cell shading and other sparkly trappings as often as my regular ol' drawing and coloring. I wouldn't want to give you my mediocre advice on that just yet ^^;

But I hope this might be a good place for you to start! :>

Thank You! I'm stuck with Photoshop Elements 6 until I can earn the money for my own copy of CS6. This is going to help for the time being.

Not a problem at all, dear!

Honestly I must say, I've had only PSE6 for the past 5 years- I think it's just as good as CS6 once you know how to use it! But really, I'm sure you'll do great either way~ best of luck to you! ; )

ALEXA PLEASE SEE THIS AND HELP ME!!! Okay so every time I use the fill when doing the thing with the word bubbles my text gets blocked out by whatever the fill color is. How do I make this not happen?

HI JIMMU YES I SEE THIS!

It's probably that the fill needs to be on its own separate layer, under the text layer!

HOLY HELL I use photoshop elements too ;A; no one else does for comics, and I didn't even realize it was you that made this tutorial until halfway down.
This has saved me. No one else uses photoshop elements for mac -___- thank you very much.
On another note, love your comics XD

This is a great tutorial! I did my borders and then when I went to draw the sketch the lines were blurry. I was using the same brush, but all of the lines I tried drawing were all pixel-y and not crisp like the ones in this tutorial. Is that because of the resolution or my zoom or something?

Thanks so much!

Hmm... Perhaps your brush is on the 'pencil' setting? When it's on the pencil setting it makes your brush pixely, like you said. You can go to your toolbar and click on its icon to select the regular brush option c:

I'm glad it could help!~

In Elements, you can't actually put it all on one layer at first, unfortunately! D:
you CAN, however, merge all of them together once you've typed them out :>

Okay, I read this over and looked at my program of Photoshop.

Since I have Photoshop CS3, I really shouldn't be asking you these things, but I have a few quick questions:

1. My Photoshop will not resize the image, the option to resize just isn't there. It's a big hassle for comics, because then I have to save it as a jpeg, open it in Paint, stretch it out, save it, reopen it in Photoshop, resave it as a PSD, and now look all my layers are gone. Is there another way to resize the image?
2. When I make text in Photoshop, it automatically creates a separate layer of text for every single freaking thing I type, so if I make a comic, I'll have 50 gazillion layers. Is there any way I can avoid this?
3. When I draw straight lines in Photoshop, it feels the need to connect my lines. It's hard to say without showing you, but let's say I draw a line down the left side of the page, up to down. Now let's say I make a line near the top, going across. Photoshop will make a huge diagonal line connecting the two from where I left off to where this line starts, even when I'm using the line tool and not the brush tool. Once again, is there any way to fix this?
4. Why do you make a separate layer for the background rather than using the background provided?

Thanks so much if you can help! :3

1. Mmmm... Not sure about this one unfortunately! D:> going to
>Image
>Resize
>Canvas Size
Should work for most versions!

2. Yes, this happens with all versions of photoshop. I know I didn't mention it in my tutorial, but there's really no way to avoid this. However! What I do is I MERGE my text layers in to one layer every time I complete a row of panels. It keeps it all manageable :>

3. Yes, I know what you mean. that happens from time to time. What works for me is, after drawing a straight line and starting the next one, first I touch down with my pen/line tool and THEN I hold down shift to make a straight line.

4. I never use the background provided, actually. This is because I don't know when I might want to put something UNDER my background layer. The background layer provided is completely locked; you can't put any layers underneath it. You can't really do ANYTHING to it. Making a new layer is less rigid :>

1. Image>Resize isn't on my Photoshop menu. Goddamn Photoshop. >.<

2. Okay, thanks! I know how to merge layers, so I will definitely try that.

3. Thanks! I'm sure that will help! :la:

4. Well, if you need to, you can delete the lock by dragging it to the trash can, but I usually don't delete the lock. I'm pretty good at putting my whole background on the background layer.

Thank you SO much for doing this! I'm currently doing my own Nuzlocke comic and I've been having some difficulty such as making the comic part long, do you a rather long sheet of paper or do you use multiple ones and put them together into a large one via photoshop?

Actually, I do it ALL on photoshop! It's all digital. I don't do anything on paper~

I just use a really long photoshop file :>

Ahhh *Grins*

My entire Nuzlocke is all drawn and inked. Question though, using photoshop would I be able to combined four maybe five pages of page and making into one, so that I have a Prologue/Part 1?

ELEMENTS~ :highfive:

This is really neat and organized. I know I'll get a few pointers from this :D (Especially that palette idea.) Thanks a bunch for making this!
I'm surprised you use Elements (I got Elements 8 with my tablet) and it's the main program I use for my stuff too :dummy: Once you play around with it a little, it's so simple to use...
